Default Hairba11’s hc4 tonka big tow

So I picked up an hc4 off a buddy.

But I’m not a super fan of the m105 trailer bed bobber, but I remember a tow company around here that had a off road recovery wrecker so I started looking for tow trucks.

I ended up winning a lot of two tonkas in rough shape.

I used the bed off one, and the booms off the other.

Have I mentioned how much I love the shot blaster at work?

And a little rustoleum apple red to match the cab.

Speaking of the cab, I yanked the dual stacks off the back of it and whipped up my own from perf metal and 5/16 brake tube.

Then I made an air cleaner mushroom from a 3/8” carriage bolt.

Looks much better.

So half the tire is sticking out. And the space between the top of the tire and the wheel well looks goofy.

Well? The bed fits in the bandsaw.

Enter bed number two.

A little shot blaster action and separation of the two pieces to get the full floor plus about 9/16 (14mm) more on each side connected to the red sides. Little welder action connects all the pieces.

New and improved wide bed.

The wider bed now straddling the fuel tanks instead of resting on top. Shorter bed mounts will lower the wheel well about 1/2 (13mm) and leave the same gap as the front fender height.

Got the rear notched to clear the bumperettes.

Whipped up the convoy lights from 10mm led flashers (yellow) and 1/4 inch brake line.

The height is right, the tires are covered, this thing looks awesome.

Just need to wire up the lights and install the boom winches when they show up.

Thanks guys.
So I wired up lights this morning.
The flashers look awesome.
One marker doesn’t work.
And some idiot put reds in the headlights instead of whites.
And at 12.5 lbs it’s listing to starboard

Red makes it go faster... so fast that she's leaning into corners standing still

To combat the sag I started today with the standard lawnmower recoil spring.

I made a replacement main leaf, then added a second main leaf with a double eye.

It’s flatter but stiffer. The ride height isn’t changed.

I also got started on some bed boxes for the chain and ropes and tools.

I even got it out and drove it around a little. This thing is awesome!

I'm digging it, except the red headlights. Might need some lettering or graphics on the sides

Planning to make the winches work?

Default Hairba11’s hc4 tonka big tow

I’ve been tossing around the name of Dirty Hooker
Yeah smaller winches are on order as are some more accessories

Speaking of:

The small winch fits inside the boom so I ordered one that looked like it. Turns out it’s 8th scale.

So it now lives on the front and two smaller winches are on order for the rear.

Then I threw some round stock in the lathe

And made some oxy-acetylene bottles for the bed.

Winches came in, got them installed on the booms. Took it for another little drive.
