When I've opened my Shapeways shop, you will be able to order the custom parts, they get printed, and are sent direct to you.

When the shop is open, I will post here first !
Ok sounds good...

this thing is awesome. how well do you think the parts are going to stand up if you get into an "accident"?

Hi duellym, thanks for you reply - I think it's more of a "when" than an "if"

The cast metal parts - Wing Mirrors and Nerf Bars are very robust and weighty - I think they will stand up well

The nylon parts should be a least as strong as the original ABS shell - they are somewhat more flexible and less brittle

I'll post here with my first damage report !

Default Junkyard Stance Sand Scorcher, Cooling Fan

The Cooling Fan slots right into the Fan Cowling

Here's the 3D printed part, in primer -

The center hole was enlarged with a 1.6mm bit, to clear the M1.6 cap head screw that will eventually fix the Cooling Fan in place

For now, it will just sit in place

Default Junkyard Stance Sand Scorcher, Distributor

The ancillary engine parts really tested the nylon material at it's smallest print size - I used .7mm minimum wall thickness to generate the most "scale" engine details possible ( for me , anyway )

First up, the Distributor

Name: 01_nd_JY-S_SS_ArtWork_ENGINE-DISTRIBUTOR_onWhite_A1.jpg
Views: 881
Size: 97.7 KB

and the first test print -

Name: 02_Junkyard_Stance_Sand_Scorcher_IMG_6994.JPG
Views: 891
Size: 69.5 KB

Name: 03_Junkyard_Stance_Sand_Scorcher_IMG_6996.JPG
Views: 923
Size: 93.3 KB

The Distributor fits on the left side of the Engine Cowling, the three pilot holes in the Engine Cowling needed enlarging to suit the M1.6, 6mm hardware (with a 1.2mm bit)

Name: 04_Junkyard_Stance_Sand_Scorcher_IMG_8738.JPG
Views: 890
Size: 85.3 KB

And the holes in the Distributor were very carefully enlarged with a 1.6mm bit, to just clear the screw

Before

Name: 05_Junkyard_Stance_Sand_Scorcher_IMG_8746.JPG
Views: 883
Size: 76.2 KB

and after

Name: 06_Junkyard_Stance_Sand_Scorcher_IMG_8747.JPG
Views: 893
Size: 78.9 KB

Ready for fitting

Name: 07_Junkyard_Stance_Sand_Scorcher_IMG_8750.JPG
Views: 886
Size: 78.1 KB

The Distributor secured in place

Name: 08_Junkyard_Stance_Sand_Scorcher_IMG_8760.JPG
Views: 860
Size: 90.5 KB

and on the the growing flat six engine

Default Junkyard Stance Sand Scorcher, Alternator

The Alternator fits on the opposite side of the Engine Cowling to the Distributor

Name: 01_nd_JY-S_SS_ArtWork_ENGINE-ALTERNATOR_onWhite_A1.jpg
Views: 894
Size: 97.6 KB

The test 3D print

Size: 91.1 KB

Name: 03_Junkyard_Stance_Sand_Scorcher_IMG_6985.JPG
Views: 892
Size: 72.6 KB

All the holes in the Alternator were enlarged in the same way as the Distributor

Name: 04_Junkyard_Stance_Sand_Scorcher_IMG_8765.JPG
Views: 894
Size: 89.6 KB

Name: 05_Junkyard_Stance_Sand_Scorcher_IMG_8767.JPG

Size: 79.0 KB

Name: 06_Junkyard_Stance_Sand_Scorcher_IMG_8769.JPG
Views: 895
Size: 79.2 KB

And the Engine Cowling was prepared to fit the part

Name: 07_Junkyard_Stance_Sand_Scorcher_IMG_8771.JPG

The Alternator, fitted in place

Name: 08_Junkyard_Stance_Sand_Scorcher_IMG_8779.JPG

And with the Distributor

Hi Trini2DBone - Thanks for checking back ! - glad you approve

I am indeed drawing, and modeling, all the parts myself - My technique for developing parts starts in quite an old school way - My favorite tools

Name: 01_Junkyard_Stance_Sand_Scorcher_284A0402.JPG
Views: 860
Size: 82.4 KB

enable detailed measurement taking

Name: 02_Junkyard_Stance_Sand_Scorcher_Sketches_A.jpg
Views: 882
Size: 88.8 KB

Name: 03_Junkyard_Stance_Sand_Scorcher_JY-S_SS_Sketches_B.jpg
Views: 884
Size: 94.4 KB

This allowed me to build a reasonably accurate model of the shell, which I refined as I made parts that didn't fit !

Name: 04_Junkyard_Stance_Sand_Scorcher_JY-S_SS_3DS-MAX_A.jpg
Views: 884
Size: 93.1 KB

Once the the model of the body shell became more accurate, the task became somewhat easier and quicker - I used to have a long commute to my day job, 10 hours a week on a train where I was able to build my Scorcher parts on a lap-top

Fitting the custom parts to each other is much easier than fitting a custom part to the curved surfaces of the Sand Scorcher. Most of the engine parts fit to each other, so most were good to go on the first attempt. The revised rear cage - as it is the interface part between my engine and the stock chassis - took about 4 prints to get a good fit, then a few more as I tweaked the design and the angle it sits at

Name: 05_Junkyard_Stance_Sand_Scorcher_JY-S_SS_3DS-MAX_B.jpg
Views: 863
Size: 97.0 KB

The build I'm showing now is the result of about 8 months of commuting !

I have never really been a big fan of the beetle buggies, but this is really changing that....will these parts eventually be available for sale on shapeways?

W O W !! That's...amazing! I'm...speachless...really.

If you ever plan to sell this great peace of modeling, please think on me.
